First cherry blossom ball drop draws big crowd to downtown Macon

Downtown Macon had a little bit of a Times Square feel Thursday night as hundreds of people gathered for the first drop of a lit cherry blossom ball.
The tower rose 35 feet over the square section of pavement at the intersection of Cherry and Third streets and began its descent seconds before midnight.
With the crowd roaring the final ticks of the countdown, the pink sphere of lights stopped and began sparkling with flashing bulbs.
Shouts of "Happy New Year" rang into the misty air with its blanket of fog settling in for the night.
Couples kissed and friends embraced. Some snapped cellphone photos for mementos from the first moments of 2010.
The strains of Auld Lang Syne on the speakers drew pairs together for the first dance of the year.
Cherry Blossom CEO Karen Lambert called the event a terrific idea that sprung from NewTown Macon.
"I think there's a lot of excitement about it. There's been a buzz," Lambert said. "I think it will just grow and grow."
The ball was recycled from the festival's old metal frame Christmas tree that used to be erected on the fountain at headquarters - a fitting tribute to the offshoot of the Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission.
"We're very happy to have it downtown dropping and all the excitement on New Year's Eve," Lambert said. "It's great."

Sacred Heart principal stays away from inquiry

In the ongoing inquiry against Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, its principal Sister S Sebastina remained missing from the scene for the third consecutive day on Thursday. The principal, who is apparently on a vacation, was supposed to join the inquiry today.
For the first time, however, the school issued a press release to the media pleading innocence. The statement, signed by Father Thomas Anchanikal, vicar general of Shimla Chandigarh Diocese, said Ruchika was never expelled from the school and only "her name was not carried on the rolls".
In an apparent bid to save itself from further humiliation, the release states, "Ruchika was never victimised by the school. When the fee was not deposited for six months continuously from April 1990 to September 1990, her name was not carried on the rolls. There is a possibility that Ruchika's parents might have withdrawn their child from the school under certain circumstances."
While the school clarified that they were "extending full cooperation" to the Administration, the UT claimed otherwise. "Sister Sebastina did not join investigation today as well. Inquiry officer Prerna Puri and deputy district education officer Saroj Mittal went to the school for the third consecutive day and returned empty-handed. The school is only inviting trouble by evading the inquiry. While the entire nation has opened their hearts to get justice for Ruchika, the school continues to remain insensitive to the issue," said a senior UT Administration official.
On Thursday, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged a protest outside the school demanding that strict action taken against it.
Vijay Singh Bhardwaj of VHP said they would demand that the state award given to Sister Sebastina for her contribution to education in 2007 be withdrawn.
She was also presented an award by the Central government for outstanding services, achievements and contributions in August 2009. Unconfirmed reports, however, claimed that Sister S Sebastina did meet officials.

KCR welcomed Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram's statement made Thursday that the meeting was called to prepare a roadmap for carving out Telangana state.
The TRS leader claimed that the Jan 5 meeting was the beginning of the process for formation of Telangana state. 'I have no doubt that Telangana state will be a reality in 2010,' he said.

Revelers' Cheers Mark New Decade in Times Square

NEW YORK (AP) -- The crystal ball has dropped and confetti has showered the crowd of hundreds of thousands of revelers in Times Square who are greeting 2010 with cheers.
With hugs and kisses, partygoers tried to look forward to a more hopeful decade after 10 years marred by war, an uncertain economy, terrorism and the threat of environmental catastrophe.
But 50-year-old reveler Gail Guay (gah-WAY') of New Hampshire had this advice: ''Don't look back.''
Organizers had mixed handwritten wishes with about 3,000 pounds of confetti. The messages include appeals for the safe return of troops fighting overseas, continued employment and a cure for diabetes.
The crowds brought out heightened security. Hundreds of officers were scattered around Times Square. Snipers were at various locations.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Hundreds of thousands of revelers gathered in chilly weather Thursday in Times Square to usher in the new decade and say goodbye to 10 years marred by war, recession, terrorism and threats of environmental catastrophe.
Fireworks were set off at about 6 p.m. and the gigantic ball was set into place in preparation for midnight. Many people wore conical party hats and 2010 glasses that blinked colorfully, and some were jumping up and down to keep warm -- the National Weather Service said the temperature will be in the low 30s and forecast snow for around midnight.
Cell phones were brought out to document the last few hours of a decade many wanted to leave behind.
Gail Guay of Raymond, N.H., came to New York City with two friends to celebrate her 50th birthday. The trio carried a huge white hotel towel with ''Happy New Year New Hampshire 2010'' printed on it.
Reflecting on the past decade when she had buried her mother, Guay had this advice: ''Don't look back.''
Her friend Doreen O'Brien, 48, of Nashua, N.H., said that the crowd in Times Square seemed to be feeling positive on the cusp of a new decade. ''People are in a great mood; it's very friendly. It's like New York has slowed down.''
But a sense of starting fresh remains elusive for many, who wonder what sort of legacy will begin on Jan. 1, 2010.
''Nothing seems to be going well,'' said John O'Donnell of Hazleton, Pa. ''People are losing their lives overseas, people are unemployed. It doesn't seem like it's about to end soon.''
David Fraley, 56, of Las Vegas, attended a party in Sin City's downtown where 35,000 were expected.
''This decade's over. Let's get a better one going,'' said Fraley, who said he lost his job as a supermarket liquor clerk in March.
''The meaning of the new decade is going to be diminished by the hangover of the last decade,'' says Bob Batchelor, professor of mass communications at Kent State University and author of ''The 2000s,'' published before the decade was even done. ''That makes it tough to be as optimistic as Americans usually are.''
But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was more tempered in his assessment.
''If you put it in the context of what people are suffering around the world, we're in very good shape,'' he said from Times Square.
Celebrations are taking many forms, with concerts, fireworks, and the timed drop of favorite local symbols.
In the Tennessee cities of Memphis and Nashville, organizers plan to drop a 10-foot red guitar. In Atlanta, an 800-pound fiberglass peach is to take a 138-foot plunge. In North Carolina, Brasstown, near the Georgia border, will have its annual opossum drop, Mount Olive will drop a 3-foot glowing pickle, and the capital city of Raleigh will lower a giant acorn. In Eastport, Maine, an 8-foot wooden sardine is dropped. And in Times Square, an 11,875-pound ball covered with more than 32,000 bulbs is in place to be lowered at midnight.
In Boston, more than 1,000 artists and performers are participating in the ''First Night'' celebrations. Artists plan to display six ice sculptures, including a replica of one of the Boston Museum of Fine Art's 4,000-year-old Egyptian sculptures.
And in Chicago, the city's Transit Authority is offering rides for a penny to help residents and visitors get in place for fireworks displays planned during the evening and at midnight.
Las Vegas prepared to welcome some 315,000 people with fireworks from casino rooftops, a traffic-free Las Vegas Strip and toasts at nightclubs from celebrities including actress Eva Longoria and rapper 50 Cent.
And around the world, from fireworks in Sydney to balloons sent aloft in Tokyo, revelers at least temporarily shelved worries about the future to bid farewell to the first decade of the 21st century.
In Times Square, organizers planned to mix about 10,000 handwritten wishes into the confetti to be dropped over the crowds. They include appeals for the safe return of troops fighting overseas, continued employment and a cure for diabetes.
The hundreds of thousands of revelers in New York City brought out heightened police security, displayed a day earlier when police evacuated several blocks around Times Square to investigate a parked van without license plates. Only clothing and clothes racks were found inside.
New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, speaking from Times Square on a Webcast, said the department had ''many, many'' police officers in the crowd, both uniformed and plainclothes.
He said officers were using bomb-sniffing dogs and technology to detect biological and chemical agents. Counter-sniper teams were set up as well.
''This is something we do every year,'' he said. ''We change it somewhat so it's not that predictable.''

Radio host Rush Limbaugh taken to hospital

"Rush was admitted to and is resting comfortably in a Honolulu hospital today," the statement from his radio program said. "Rush appreciates your prayers and well wishes and will keep you updated."

Kit Carson, Limbaugh's chief of staff, said he had no further information on his condition. He said the 58-year-old left for his usual Christmas vacation on December 23 and was due to return to his show on Monday.

Carson had no further information on whether that schedule would change.

Limbaugh's three-hour weekday show is heard on about 600 radio stations across the US, and more than 14 million people listen to him at least once a week.

Honolulu television station KITV reported that paramedics took Limbaugh to The Queens Medical Centre in a serious condition from the Kahala Hotel.
Limbaugh was seen golfing at a country club next to the hotel this week.

Americans said in a poll last month that Limbaugh was most influential US conservative voice. With his sarcastic putdowns of liberal policies, off-colour parodies and self-promotion, he began capturing listeners in the 1980s and grew to become the highest-rated radio broadcaster in the US.

He found a renewed purpose and boosted ratings by railing against Barack Obama's presidency. In 2003, Limbaugh acknowledged he was addicted to pain medicine. He blamed the addiction on severe back pain and took leave from his radio show to enter rehab.

A full moon triggering eruption? Once in a blue moon

The New Year will be ushered in by a full moon, bathing outdoor celebrations with its soft light. At least one government scientist suggests a less benign effect: the full moon’s gravitational pull could hasten the eruption of Mount Mayon. However, this is a notion that has previously been debunked.

In an interview with reporters yesterday, Julio Sabit, Phivolcs spokesperson and science research specialist, said that the full moon tonight could help intensify volcanic activity.

"The chances of a full moon itself causing an eruption are very minimal," he explained, “but it could trigger one if the volcano is already about to erupt."

The moon’s gravity has been scientifically proven to affect the Earth, mostly through the changes it affects in the Earth's tides, which are highest during full moons. However, no similar connection has been proven between the moon and volcanic activity.

Full moon coincides with Mayon's eruption?

The notion of a full moon triggering an eruption of Mayon has been advanced before, at one time even broadcast by the BBC during a previous restive period for one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The BBC reported that “a full moon coincided with at least three of Mayon's 47 eruptions, including the two most recent ones in 2000 and 2001."

That “coincidence" was quickly labeled a “"weak link at best," says astronomer Phil Plait on his blog.

“Statistically speaking, the Moon has nothing to do with eruptions," Plait writes. “If it did, you’d expect to see a bump in the number of events near the full Moon. But the number of eruptions near the full Moon is what you’d expect from random chance."

A blue moon in name but not in color

The full moon tonight is also “a blue moon," which, in the astronomical sense, has nothing to do with its color but with being the second full moon in the same calendar month. The last full moon was on December 2. The rarity of this event led to the expression “once in a blue moon."

Blue moons weren’t always so blue –not literally, at least.

In the early days of Christianity, celebrations such as Christmas and Easter were closely tied in to the harvest seasons and the lunar cycle. The celebration of Lent, in particular, was closely tied in to the appearance of the full moon in late winter.

Sometimes, however, there would be an “extra" full moon in the cycle, making it seem that the winter moon had come too early or too late. This additional moon was called a “betrayer" moon or, in Old English, a “blewe moon."

Yet no matter how you squint at it, a blue moon won’t appear to be literally blue. That is, not unless there’s a large-scale volcanic eruption. In 1883, the explosion of Krakatoa volcano in the South Pacific sent up into the atmosphere particles of ash that were fine enough to serve as a kind of optical filter. As a result, the normally white moonlight turned a light shade of blue.

We may be able to see just such a blue moon if and when Mount Mayon in Bicol explodes, emitting a large enough ash cloud with the right kinds of particles.

Tax and regulation top firms' wish lists

Tax breaks and less government red tape are top of the New Year wish-list for the Midland businesses community according to new research from Yorkshire Bank.

More than a quarter of Midlands businesses – 30 per cent – feel a reduction in tax is the single change that would make the biggest difference to their ability to get through the recession.

And over a further quarter – 27.5 per cent – would like a reduction in government red tape such as simplified regulation or less paperwork.

Steve Cronin, managing partner at Yorkshire Bank’s Financial Solutions Centre in Temple Row in Birmingham, said: “The Government has acted this year to make the UK as healthy an environment as possible to do business.

“However, the sentiment being felt on the ground is that those measures may not have gone far enough.”

“The effects of a recession can be felt long after the end of the downturn and this research shows that businesses feel government support should be long term, practical and more far-reaching.”

The bank’s research also shows support for increased government grants and for the current reduced VAT rate to have been made permanent instead of ending in January as planned.

It seems to be the younger generation who feel most burdened by tax, with a third placing its reduction at the top of their business’s wish-list.

However, it is this younger age group that is also seemingly less concerned than any other about the issue of government red tape, with less than a fifth wishing for a reduction.

Despite the call for tax breaks, research released earlier this year by Yorkshire Bank showed that more than 90 per cent of UK businesses feel the UK is still the best place for them to do business. The majority – 66 per cent – also believe that the UK will start to experience an economic upturn by spring 2011 and nine out of 10 business managers are confident that their company will survive the recession.

Los Angeles, ring in 2010 without a bang

New Year's Eve revelers are reminded that firing a gun to celebrate is a felony, Los Angeles officials warned Tuesday."Let's not place others in harm's way by shooting a firearm in the air," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said at a news conference where he was joined by sheriff's and police officials."It is not only illegal, it is just plain stupid."Last year, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department saw a 19% increase in reports of shots fired during New Year's festivities, and the Los Angeles Police Department reported a 10% jump. The increases came after nearly a decade of declines.LAPD Asst. Chief Michel Moore said last year's uptick was a warning that the community needs to do more to stem the problem."We need your help in identifying the few individuals who . . . engage in this activity," Moore said. "If you see or hear shots being fired, immediately call 911."He cautioned anyone hoping to fire a weapon in celebration to think twice."You will be arrested. You will go to jail. . . . This is state prison time," he said. "It is disastrous for the innocent victims, and it will be disastrous for your future."Sheriff Lee Baca said that in some areas his deputies would be aided by a so-called ShotSpotter system, which uses noise sensors to quickly track the location of gunfire."It is accurate within 10 feet," Baca said.

Nokia says most Apple products violate its patents

Nokia, the world's largest phone maker, filed its new complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

The Finnish phone maker alleges that Apple is using patented technologies to "create key features in its products", including iPods and iPhones.

In October Nokia sued Apple, saying that the company's popular touchscreen iPhone infringed 10 of its patents.

Apple told the BBC that it would not comment on Nokia latest legal move.

However, the US firm recently countered by filing its own lawsuit against Nokia, saying the phone maker had copied certain aspects of the iPhone and infringed 13 of its patents.

The new complaint to the ITC relates to seven patents related to "user interface, as well as camera, antenna and power management technologies".

Nokia told Reuters that the firm expected the ITC to decide whether to pursue the case in around 30 days.

China shows defiance with Briton's execution

EIJING — China executed a British man for drug smuggling Tuesday, ignoring international pleas for clemency on the grounds he was mentally unstable and warning London that its outrage threatened relations.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "appalled" by the execution — China's first of a European citizen in nearly 60 years. But Beijing dismissed claims by relatives and rights groups that 53-year-old Akmal Shaikh's mental instability was exploited to lure him into smuggling a suitcase of heroin into the country.

Beijing's insistence in carrying out the death sentence reflects both the communist government's traditional distrust of foreign interference and its newfound power to resist Western pressure.

"We express our strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the British accusation," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters at a regularly scheduled news conference. "We urge the British side to correct its wrongdoing to avoid causing damages to bilateral relations."

Though rare, China has in the past pardoned prisoners or released them early in response to international pressure, particularly those accused of spying or political or economic crimes.

But with its rising global economic and political clout, China appears increasingly willing to ignore Western complaints over its justice system and human rights record. And as it relies more and more on China's cooperation to solve global problems — from the recession to climate change — the West has few ways to exert pressure on Beijing.

China's leaders "feel freer than their recent predecessors to disregard world pressures," said Jerome Cohen, an expert on China's legal system at New York University School of Law.

Whereas in the past, the West may have held out its approval as a carrot for China to improve its record on human rights, analyst Kerry Brown said now countries like Britain are now the ones eager to maintain good relations.

"There is a feeling that we have very limited leverage on China. We have to pick our territory where we can have an impact," said Brown, a China expert at the Chatham House think tank. "It's becoming more complicated by the day."

Foreign Office Minister Ivan Lewis called Tuesday a "deeply depressing day for anyone with a modicum of compassion or commitment to justice." Prime Minister Brown said he condemned the execution "in the strongest terms, and am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted."

But tellingly, Lewis also said "we must and will continue to engage with China."

Recent weeks have seen China flex its new muscle repeatedly, and criticism from the West has mattered little.

Last week, a court sentenced Liu Xiaobo, the co-author of a political reform manifesto, to 11 years in prison in what rights groups called a direct rebuff to international pressure.

Earlier in the month, China urged Cambodia to interrupt a U.N. refugee screening process and subsequently Phnom Penh repatriated 20 ethnic Uighur asylum-seekers accused of involvement in ethnic unrest in western China.

The drug trafficking accusation against Shaikh made the case particularly sensitive in China, said University of Miami politics expert June Teufel Dreyer. Chinese nationalists say European powers, especially Britain, foisted opium on an unwitting populace in the 19th century after the country was forced to open its borders to European trade.

"Part of the narrative of the communists' liberating China from oppression is the wicked practice of foreign imperialist powers foisting drugs on a weak China," said Dreyer.

Eradicating widespread opium use was one of the founding legacies of the communist state, and Chinese nationalists have long pointed to the introduction of the drug as evidence of the nefarious influence of foreign powers.

Today, China's harsh penalties for drug use and selling also reflect its obsession with maintaining law and order amid sweeping social change.

Shaikh, a Pakistan-born former cab company manager, was arrested in 2007 for carrying a suitcase with almost 9 pounds (4 kilograms) of heroin into China on a flight from Tajikistan. His cousins said he was lured to China from a life on the street in Poland by men playing on his dreams to record a pop song for world peace.

He was convicted in 2008 after a half-hour trial. China has said there was no proof he was mentally ill, but one of Shaikh's Beijing-based lawyers said Tuesday that the country's highest court never evaluated his client's mental status.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said Shaikh was put to death by lethal injection. China, which puts to death more people each year than any other country, is increasingly abandoning firing squads for lethal injection. Earlier this year, Amnesty International said China executed at least 1,718 people in 2008. The exact number is not known.

The press office of the Xinjiang region where Shaikh had been held confirmed the execution.

The last known European executed in China was Antonio Riva, an Italian pilot who was shot by a firing squad in 1951 after being convicted of involvement in what China said was a plot to assassinate Mao Zedong and other high-ranking communist officials.

Shaikh's daughter Leilla Horsnell was quoted by the BBC and other British media outlets as saying she was "shocked and disappointed that the execution went ahead with no regards to my dad's mental health problems, and I struggle to understand how this is justice."

ANIRuchika case will be reinvestigated as a model case : Moily

Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily said here on Tuesday that the molestation and suicide of teenager Ruchika Girhotra will be re-investigated as a model case.
Moily also opined that the accused should be tried for abetment to suicide of a minor to demonstrate that nobody can subvert the rule of law.
Interacting with a private news channel Moily said : "This could be a model case, where we will have to demonstrate to the entire country that the rule of law is utmost and it will apply to everybody and rule will have to be properly demonstrated - that is the will power of the nation."
Moily said the case seems to have been built on the original molestation complaint by Ruchika, but he felt that the subsequent harassment of Ruchika, her brother and family should be the basis of the probe and trial.
"In fact, the first case was when attempt was made to molest the girl. The case seems to have been built on that basis. But she died. All the harassment made to her, (her) brother, of her (being) taken out from school leading to the death...The right case is under Section 305 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which is about abetment of suicide of a minor," Moily said.
Moily said that the authorities who subverted law to favour Rathore may also face charges of abetment to suicide.
He said learning from the experience in the case, a more stringent law for faster trial for sexual offences will be enforced.
"We have been talking to theCentral Bureau of Investigation(CBI). I have been talking to the Solicitor General of India. In the long run, we would like to see that rigorous law is enforced, particularly for sexual offences committed by people.
"We are contemplating a Sexual Offences Special Courts' Bill, which will fast track trial within six months or one year," Moily added. (ANI)

Wedding bells for Kylie Minogue?

Singer Kylie Minogue has fuelled rumours that she may soon tie the knot with her Spanish model boyfriend Andres Velencoso.
The two visited each other's families this festive season.
The couple spent a week in Sydney with the 41-year-old singer's family.
In Melbourne, they enjoyed time with Kylie's sister, Dannii and her boyfriend, Kris Smith, and attended her grandmother's 90th birthday.
The couple then flew to Spain on Christmas Eve to be with Velencoso's father and sisters.
Dannii revealed that the sisters always got competitive at Christmas over buying the best presents.
"We love it when we find the perfect gift," the Courier Mail quoted Dannii as telling aceshowbiz.com.
"This sometimes means presents come months after an event, so we don't always rush to look under the Christmas tree," she added.

ABVP attacks Chiru kin's film shooting unit in Hyderabad

Attacks on film shootings continued here for the second day today with a film unit of Allu Aravind, brother-in-law of Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi, coming under attack by ABVP activists.
Activists of the student-wing affiliated to the BJP obstructed shooting of a Telugu movie produced by Aravind, on the outskirts of the city today.
The film unit was planning to take up shooting of the movie at a location behind the Ramoji film city and set up its equipments, when some members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) suddenly went to the area and stopped the unit from taking the shooting, a senior police officer said.
"About eight activists of the ABVP went to the area where a tent was erected to undertake the shooting of the film and threatened the crew members to stop its shooting and to immediately pack up," L B Nagar DCP A Satyanarayana told PTI, adding the activists ran away after seeing the police.
Aravind was, however, not present at the location when the incident happened, he said.
The ABVP activists also warned the crew members. "You better take up the film shooting in Andhra region and not in Telangana," they allegedly said, according to another police official. Hayathnagar police are investigating the matter.
The incident comes a day after TRS activists disrupted shooting of a Telugu movie, starring Manoj, son of noted Telugu actor M Mohan Babu.

Telangana agitation intensifies, thousands protest on streets

The ongoing agitation for statehood to Andhra Pradesh's Telangana region intensified on Tuesday as thousands of people from all walks of life came on to the streets in various districts to press for their demand.
Protests, road blockades, rallies, processions, meetings, human chains and cultural programmes were organised across the region by all political parties and other pro-Telangana groups.
Tension continued at Osmania University, the nerve centre of the agitation, as students took out a procession to the police station demanding release of their leaders. Police had a tough time controlling the angry students.
The protest was held even as police stepped up efforts to foil the plans of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the students for a 'Chalo Hyderabad' march and rally Jan 3. Police have denied permission for the protests and imposed prohibitory orders in and around the city.
However, the government Tuesday received a jolt with the state high court quashing its order for closure of all university hostels and messes in Telangana. The court directed that the hostels and messes be reopened with necessary measures to prevent the entry of outsiders.
Police went on alert in Hyderabad and other parts of the region a day ahead of the shutdown called by the all-party JAC. Additional forces, including paramilitary personnel, were deployed in the state capital and other towns.
The tussle between students on hunger strike and the police continued on the campuses of all universities in the region, especially the Kakatiya University in Warangal.
Some student unions have threatened to disrupt New Year celebrations at Ramoji Film City on the outskirts of Hyderabad. A group of students staged a protest outside the film city owned by media baron Ramoji Rao.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner B. Parasada Rao has warned of strict action against those planning to disrupt New Year celebrations in the city.
Demanding withdrawal of cases booked against those participating in the agitation, lawyers staged a sit-in outside the Nampally criminal court complex.
In Warangal, students, lawyers and government employees came together to stage massive protests. Lawyers boycotted courts.
In Karimnagar town, hundreds of people marched through the streets demanding the immediate formation of Telangana state. Leaders of all parties vowed not to rest till the central government announced the formation of the state.
Protesters in various towns also used folk songs and cultural performances to highlight their demand.
In Mahabubnagar district, government employees resorted to a 'pen down' protest in support of the Telangana movement.
The 'fast unto death' and relay hunger strikes by students, lawyers and legislators cutting across party lines also continued.

CHENNAI: Electronics and home appliances manufacturer Samsung India today said it would more than double the number of its CDMA-based phone modelsto 15 by end of next year to tap the Open Market Handset segment. Open Market Handsets (OMHs) are those which are available in the market directly from retailers compared to CDMA phones which were available only with the telecom operators, Samsung India Electronics Vice-President-HHP Division Hendrick Lee told reporters here. "The OMH market is expected to reach 30 per cent in 2010. It is currently 20 per cent as compared to five per cent in 2007-08, and with this growth we expect the market size of CDMA mobile phones to expand in future," he said. The company in 2003 entered the CDMA category bundled with various telecom operators. Since then, it has been launching various CDMA enabled phones. However, with the growth of OMH, the company is hoping to launch more CDMA enabled phones in future, Lee said. Samsung India launched the CDMA version of its popular selling model Corby SPEED here.

NFL: Bears top Vikings in overtime

Brett Favre cranked up and made one more impossible throw, zinging a touchdown pass in the fading seconds. Too bad for the Minnesota Vikings, that merely put them into overtime.
The Vikings lost again Monday night, beaten by the host Chicago Bears 36-30 when Jay Cutler tossed a 39-yard strike to Devin Aromashodu. Minnesota fell for the third time in four games, and the defeat gave the New Orleans Saints homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.
Favre's stunning, fourth-down pass to Sidney Rice with 16 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, but Cutler threw the game-winner to prevent the Vikings (11-4) from locking up a first-round playoff bye.
Nick Roach recovered a fumble by Adrian Peterson following a catch, setting up Cutler's fourth touchdown pass of the game.
Favre's pass to a leaping Rice capped a 68-yard touchdown drive and tied the score at 30.
Chicago's Robbie Gould had a chance to win it on the first possession of the overtime but missed a 45-yard field-goal try wide right.
The Bears (5-10) took advantage a few minutes later, though, when Hunter Hillenmeyer knocked the ball away from Peterson and Roach recovered. Cutler found an open Aromashodu, who had beaten Antoine Winfield, and the Bears won for just the third time in 11 games.
Minnesota can lock up a first-round bye with a win next week and loss or tie by Philadelphia or with a tie and an Eagles loss.
Running back Steven Jackson, who was a surprise scratch Sunday for St. Louis in a 31-10 loss at Arizona, said he expects to play against the 49ers in the season finale.
Jackson said he has been playing with a herniated disk that will not require surgery.
Guard Mark Setterstrom has a torn left triceps that will keep him out of Sunday's game. Defensive end Leonard Little has missed the past two games because of a knee infection, but coach Steve Spagnuolo said he was hopeful Little could return Sunday.
Eagles: Center Jamaal Jackson's season is over after he tore a knee ligament Sunday against Denver.
Jackson made his 71st consecutive start against the Broncos and was Philadelphia's only offensive player to play every snap until he got hurt in the first half.
Dolphins: A person familiar with Channing Crowder's foot injury said the Miami linebacker is out for the season. The person said Crowder underwent an MRI exam Monday, but a decision had not yet been made whether he needs surgery.
Crowder hurt his right foot on the second play of Sunday's game against Houston and missed the rest of the game.
Broncos: Denver will be without starting left guard Russ Hochstein and returner Kenny McKinley for the season finale against Kansas City after both suffered knee injuries at Philadelphia.
Buccaneers: Running back Earnest Graham and defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson will miss Tampa Bay's season finale against Atlanta after being injured during an upset victory over New Orleans on Sunday.
Graham tore a ligament in the big toe on his right foot. Wilkerson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Unemployment, not Woods, Florida's top story in 2009

MIAMI - The state's weak economy beat out the Tiger Woods scandal to be Florida's top news story in 2009.
Newspaper editors from throughout the state voted in The Associated Press poll.
Florida's unemployment rate hit 11.5 percent in November, the highest since 1975. More than a million people are out of work. The construction industry has lost the most jobs, 73,000.
The state also has the second-highest foreclosure rate. One out of every 165 homes was in some stage of foreclosure last month.
Only Nevada's rate was worse. Housing prices had dropped almost 7 percent in October over the same month last year.
Woods' reputation imploded after a November fender-bender outside his suburban Orlando home. That led to reports of rampant infidelity.

A Non-Offensive Reaction to a Successful Anti-Terrorist Strike

On Christmas Eve, I had a few moments before family arrived to skim the web looking for news. One story that lept out alleged that the radical Muslim, Iman Anwar Alawki was killed in a joint effort between the US & Yemen military. Alawki is an American who is alleged to have had contacts with the Fort Hood shooter, Major Hassan. There has been much speculation that he may have influenced the actions of Major Hassan. There is no question that Iman Alawki has urged violence in the past.
Apparently, Yemenese military attacked a large Al Quida base camp on Christmas Eve which was holding a meeting of top leaders of the movement. An un-named Yemen official reported that Alawki was killed in the attack.
I quoted the AP article and wished Alawki a very Merry Christmas from all the US and especially the men and women of Fort Hood.
It recieved close to 500 views in less than three hours. Some of whom apparently found it offensive. One person even felt compelled to join FOX4 specifically to tell me that my joy on Christmas Eve over Alawki's reported death was unChristian and that it was never proven that Major Hassan was working with anyone but acted alone.
I responded to the new blogger by stating that: I wasn't a Christian so I didn't feel bad for celebrating the death of a man who has repeatedly advocated violence against the US on Christmas Eve. And that while I agreed that he didn't give orders to Major Hassan, I felt that Alawki's violent rhetoric may have influenced Hassan's actions. (The same way that I feel that Glenn Beck's rhetoric can influence the actions of others.) And since Alawki was in attendence of a meeting of top Al Quida officials...it wasn't like he could claim innocence. I believe I called it "guilt by association". So I stood by my original post and refused to apologize for not showing more Christian mercy on the day arbitrarily picked to represent the birth of Christ.
The post got pulled by Fox 4.
Now, I'm not objecting to that. It actually makes sense to me. If my post caused that much of an uproar, a responsible business owner would pull it. (And let's be clear.....First Amendment Rights do not apply to privately owned web sites. If Fox 4 doesn't like my post because it causes them problems with thier viewers, I have multiple options to post on other sites.)
Unfortunately, since that original post, two things have happened. The Yemenese government is now back tracking on whether Awlaki was killed or not. (Though the report that over 30 Al Quida leaders were killed still stands.) And less than 12 hours after Fox pulled my original post, a man climbed aboard an American flight from Europe carrying a "bomb" supplied to him from someone in Yemen!
Those of you who read my posts often know that I am a firm believer that not all muslims are terrorists. I have never denied having many Muslim friends and I have a deep love for both thier culture and their friendship. But that love does not extend to terrorists.
There are lots of questions about what happened and how it happened. American partisan politics and desperate-for-news-during-a-holiday media will disect this time and time again. But both the US and Al Quida have learned something this holiday season.
Americans have learned that we still have holes in our security. We still have room for improvement. And Al Quida leaders have learned that from top military officials all the way down to American passengers sitting behind your bomber....Americans will not rest in our efforts to stop you. Not even during Christmas!

India-Lanka ODI abandoned, Delhi shamed

NEW DELHI: India’s cricket board (BCCI) is the world’s richest, and Delhi is India’s ‘showpiece’ capital, which aspires to world city status. But onSunday, Delhi was left hanging its head in shame as the fifth One-dayer between India and Sri Lanka at Ferozeshah Kotla was called off after 23.3 overs due to dangerously poor pitch conditions. The BCCI, which always shows alacrity when it comes to making money from cricket, took absolutely no action for several months even as the Kotla pitch came under heavy criticism. It finally suspended its Grounds and Pitches Committee, headed by Daljit Singh, after Sunday’s fiasco. But it was a classic case of locking the stable after the horse has bolted. Even tiny centres around the world manage to produce pitches that last a full day’s cricket, but the capital of the game’s commercial superpower is unable to do so. The cancellation came at 11.20am, with Sri Lanka having scored 83/5. Both captains - MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara - the match referee, and officials from the two cricket boards came to the conclusion that conditions were too dangerous for batsmen to allow the match to continue. By then, the Lankan batsmen had already taken numerous blows. Delhi was shamed and with the Commonwealth Games to be held next year, the incident was another upsetting turn of events for the Delhi government, which has been struggling to promote the Capital’s readiness as a quality sporting host. This was a farce waiting to happen as the BCCI failed to heed continuous uproar over poor pitch conditions at the venue ever since the T20 Champions League and the India-Australia ODI here on Oct 31. DDCA has for long been a hotbed of mismanagement and the BCCI’s track record isn’t too good either, with the lights going off at Eden Gardens in just the previous game. Incidentally, on December 25, 1997 the same two teams were involved in an identical situation at the Nehru Stadium in Indore, leading to a subsequent ICC ban on the venue. The BCCI immediately suspended its pitches and grounds committee, meaning chief Daljit Singh, who was involved role in the preparation of this Kotla surface, has been sacked. The DDCA’s own local curator Vijay Bahadur Mishra, its ground and pitches committee chairman, Chetan Chauhan and committee’s convener Sunil Dev too have quit. Daljit’s sacking, though, did not come about until another queer round of blame games between the DDCA and BCCI, with BCCI’s Rajeev Shukla telling reporters just minutes before secretary N Srinivasan issued the order to disband the committee that ‘‘it is a DDCA matter and as of now, Daljit retains his post’’. Chaos, confusion and total mismanagement prevailed for nearly an hour and a half after Thilina Kandamby decided he had had enough, after yet another delivery, this time from Sudeep Tyagi, hit one of the numerous grassy patches on the pitch and took off. Lankan captain Sangakkara and teammate Mahela Jayawardene, who was not playing in this game, immediately signalled for the players to come off, kickstarting intense mid-pitch discussions involving the curators - BCCI’s Daljit and local man Vijay Bahadur Mishra - the two captains, match referee Alan Hurst, the two coaches Gary Kirsten and Trevor Bayliss, and later DDCA and BCCI officials. Then the players left for the dressing room. Officials panicked once they realised Hurst was in agreement with the captains, and offered him a host of options, including a makeshift game on an equally underprepared adjacent pitch. When this did not work, they pleaded that the crowd could be difficult to control, but Hurst, and subsequently the captains, stood their ground, with Hurst arguing that the adjacent pitch too was substandard and unfit for any international game. Kept in the dark for too long, irate fans exploded, chanting anti-DDCA slogans, uprooting billboards and chairs, throwing missiles and water bottles and shouting that they wanted their money back. Sensing trouble and acting on police advice, the players were immediately whisked out of the ground, even before the game had been officially called off. The rioting continued even after a majority of spectators had left, until the electronic screen flashed that pitch conditions had led to a cancellation, and the DDCA had apologised and promised to refund ticket money. In fact, the game could have been called off earlier too, when Dilshan was struck a painful blow on the left arm off a Nehra delivery which shot up in the 10th over. That blow necessitated a trip to the hospital. Even earlier, Jayasuriya barely fended off a menacing Zaheer before being struck on the knuckles in the 16th over. Pushpakumara and Kandamby then found the going too hot, until sanity prevailed. The cancellation was a huge embarrassment for DDCA president and BJP bigwig Arun Jaitley, who was cajoled by the media to state his case. ‘‘We have to analyse in a cooler environment," he said.

Ricky Ponting on brink of history

Attempting to overcome a benign MCG pitch and his modest spin attack, Ponting surprisingly closed Australia's first innings midway through the second day when runs were easy and plenty of wickets remained.
In reply to Australia's 5(dec)-454, Pakistan had limped to 4-109 from 49 overs by stumps on a pitch so lifeless that even night watchman Nathan Hauritz nudged and smacked 75, his highest Test score. He had resumed on five and Mike Hussey 37 with the overnight score 3-305.
Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam was surprised by the declaration but praised it. "I thought it was a very positive declaration," he said. "I think it is very wise that he has declared, you need more time.
"The old days are gone from when you could follow on.You need to get some rest for your bowlers. I think it was a very positive, very exciting declaration."
Should Australia win this match, which will take an awful lot of hard work on this lifeless strip, it will give Ponting more victories than any other skipper in 132 years of Test cricket. This is remarkable given that he is the first Australian captain in more than 100 years and just the second in history to lead two losing tours of England, prompting calls for his head.
Ponting and Steve Waugh stand at the top of Test cricket's illustrious table with 41 wins apiece, followed by Clive Lloyd with 36. The third Test victory in Perth against the West Indies little more than a week ago, which allowed Ponting to equal Waugh's record, was completely overshadowed by poor behaviour.
Three Australians were fined and West Indian spinner Sulieman Benn suspended.
Given he had so many wickets in hand and so much time to play with, Ponting could have batted on to make the game completely safe.
But he doesn't bat that way and, despite his leadership critics, doesn't captain that way.
Ponting would much rather be remembered for winning and the new video review system may just get him over the line no matter how time-consuming it is.
It was responsible for two of the four Pakistani wickets to fall yesterday, including one in the last over delivered by Peter Siddle.
It was the vital wicket of captain Mohammad Yousuf, who was given not out to a big appeal for a caught behind down the leg side off his glove by umpire Billy Doctrove.
Video umpire Asoka De Silva agreed after some deliberation that Yousuf, on 22, had indeed gloved the ball.
The third wicket, Salman Butt (45 in almost three hours) also went to video review after he disputed a leg-before-wicket decision from umpire Rudi Koertzen when Shane Watson was bowling. The appeal was denied.
The Australian fast bowlers declined to pitch the ball up, pinning the Pakistani batsmen uncomfortably on the crease as survival completely overtook the notion of shot-making. That allowed Mitchell Johnson to eventually trap Imran Farhat leg before wicket for nine made in almost an hour. With experienced former captain Younus Khan not on tour the demise of Yousuf has left a big hole in Pakistan's batting.
Much responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Umar Akmal, the younger brother of wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal. Umar, who scored a century on debut during the just completed tour of New Zealand, is unbeaten on 10.
Both Australia's wickets to fall yesterday, Hussey and Hauritz, went to review decisions. Hussey went leg before wicket sweeping at off-spinner Saeed Ajmal for 82 and asked for Doctrove's decision to be reviewed but lost, just.
And Hauritz, who was very lucky not to be given run-out on 14 by video review when it appeared the bail had been lifted, was eventually very leg before wicket to paceman Abdur Rauf when the Pakistanis had a surprising not-out call from Koertzen overturned. Hauritz brought to 20 the number of innings between a half and a full century this summer with no Australian going on to three figures. But it is his bowling which will really count in this game. He wheeled away yesterday claiming 1-34 from 14 overs.
Hauritz experienced the full range of emotions in the space of four balls. First Faisal Iqbal was well caught at slip by Michael Clarke for a soporific 15, then Hauritz watched Pakistani captain Yousuf get off the mark with his side's first six, struck sweetly just to the right of the sight screen.

Nine Telangana Ministers demand time frame

NEW DELHI: Nine of the 13 Andhra Pradesh Ministers from Telangana who have resigned over the issue, on Sunday held consultations with party seniors here and urged them to convey to the Congress leadership the need for announcing a time frame for forming a Telangana State.
The Ministers, who faxed their resignation in a joint letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, met Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy and Congress Working Committee member K. Keshava Rao (both belong to Telangana region). The Ministers did not want Mr. Reddy to resign from the Union Cabinet as they wanted him to be in the government and fight for Telangana.
They told the leaders that Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s statement on Wednesday stating that further consultation would be held with the political groups and others had caused apprehension among the people that the subject had been put on hold.
They also plan to meet in the next couple of days Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Chidambaram among others to press their demand.
Information Minister J. Geeta Reddy asked both the Centre and the Congress to come out with a time-bound programme for the creation of Telangana.
They also planned to meet other party seniors like Pranab Mukherjee, A.K. Antony, Ahmed Patel and M. Veerappa Moily.
The other Ministers in the delegation were: P. Sudarshan Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, V. Sunita Laksma Reddy, D.K. Aruna, D. Sridhar Babu, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, R. Venkat Reddy and J. Krishna Rao.
Meanwhile, all the 11 Lok Sabha members from Telangana, who have already sent their resignations to Ms. Gandhi are expected to come back to Delhi on Monday to continue to mount pressure on the Centre.
Peddapalle Lok Sabha member G. Vivekanand said there was no question of withdrawing the resignation letter till they get some satisfactory statement from the Centre on the statehood issue and the time-frame. He said only the Congress could form Telangana as it had the numbers in Parliament. He allayed apprehension of the Andhra settlers in Hyderabad stating that their interests would be protected.

President Obama orders security review after attack on Flight 253 by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab

President Obama has ordered a review of airport security screening amid questions about how a known extremist whose own father dropped a dime on him to U.S security was able to board a U.S.-bound flight with explosives in his underpants.
"What the President has asked for as a result of this incident are two look-back reviews,"White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Sunday, appearing on Abc-TV' s "This Week" with George Stephanopolos.
"First, on our watch-listing procedures, did the government do everything that it could have with the information that they had?"
Gibbs said the President, who is vacationing in Hawalli, aims "to ensure that there is no clog in the bureaucratic plumbing of information that might be gathered."
Nigerian national Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was charged with trying to detonate an explosive aboard Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day.
Despite warnings from the suspect's powerful father in Nigeria and his name appearing on an American terrorist watch list, Abdulmutallab was not on a "no fly" list, which would have prevented him from boarding the flight.
Gibbs also said the president wants the Department of Homeland Security to "answer they very real question about how somebody with something as dangerous as PETN [explosives] could have gotten onto a plane in Amsterdam."
Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano said Sunday that "everything went according to clockwork" after the attack.
"I think the important thing to recognize here is that once this incident occurred, everything happened that should have," Napolitano told ABC News.
"The authorities in Amsterdam are working with us to make sure that screening was properly done. We have no suggestion that it wasn't, but we're actually going through - going backwards, tracing his route."
Napolitano said there is "no initial evidence" that the attacker was involved in a larger terrorist plot, but authorities are investigation Abdulmutallab's alleged ties toA1 Qaeda.
Authorities in Nigeria said Sunday that Abdulmutallab "sneaked into Nigeria on the 24th of December and left the same day." Abdulmutallab told investigators Saturday he had been in Yemen at an Al Qaeda training camp for a month before the attack.

Iran protests leave nine dead, reports claim

The nephew of reformist opposition leader, Mir Hossein Mousavi, was reported to be among at least nine people killed after the streets of Tehran and other cities erupted in violent clashes between security forces and protesters.
Ali Mousavi, 35 and a father of two, was reportedly shot through the heart after police opened fire during disturbances in Tehran's Enghelab Square.
The authorities tonight tried to assert control over Tehran by reportedly declaring a 7pm curfew and outlawing all gatherings of more than three people, a source inside the capital told the Guardian.
The move followed announcements by opposition supporters of plans to meet in some of the city's main squares and parks to mark Sham-e Ghariban, which is part of the Ashura ceremonies.
News of Mousavi's nephew's death, reported by the reformist website Parlemannews, was certain to send shock waves through Iran's opposition Green Movement.
There were reports of at least four other fatalities in Tehran and four more in Tabriz as tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered for the Shia Ashura ceremonies and to voice anger against the government.
Parlemannews reported that Mousavi had gone to Ebn-e Sina Hospital, where the body of his nephew had been taken. He was accompanied by the dead man's parents and fellow reformist politicians.
Rah-e Sabz, another reformist website, reported large crowds of people moving towards Ebn-e Sina Hospital in a show of solidarity with Mousavi after the death.
Rah-e Sabz also reported at least four other people were killed in the capital, including an elderly man who was shot through the forehead at a crossroads in Tehran city centre. Two others were said to have been shot nearby at Kalej bridge, in Enghelab Street. Rah-e Sabz, citing witnesses, said crowds held up the elderly man and started chanting slogans against Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Another person was reportedly killed after being beaten on the head with a baton, according to Rah-e Sabz.
Meanwhile, Rouydad News, another opposition site, reported that four people were killed in the northern city of Tabriz.
Crowds prevented security forces from taking away those wounded in the Tehran shootings. According to other eyewitness reports, members of the hardline Basij militia attacked demonstrators with daggers and knives.
Disturbances were also reported in Isfahan, Shiraz, Masshad, Arak and Najafabad, where the Rah-e Sabz described the situation as "severe".
Najafabad, birthplace of the dissident Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, who died last Sunday, has witnessed several outbreaks of unrest in the past week.
Today's religious ceremonies – marking the 7th-century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hossein – coincides with the ritual seven-day mourning ceremonies for Montazeri, who had repeatedly criticised the government and denounced President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election last summer as invalid.
Ashura ceremonies commonly feature vast crowds of people marching and beating their chests in memory of Imam Hossein, who is seen as a martyr against oppressive government. This year the opposition pledged to use the holy day to voice continued opposition to the government.
The authorities responded by warning of a huge crackdown. Hospitals and emergency services were put on alert to expect large-scale casualties.
The authorities are taking a risk in using lethal force against protesters during the Islamic month of Moharram, during which war and bloodshed is deemed to be religiously haram, or forbidden. It raises the likelihood of a series of mourning cycles, as required by Shia tradition. It was such a mourning cycle that fatally undermined the Shah's regime when it tried to suppress demonstrations in 1978.

Tight security after attempted terror attack

They are also being subjected to more intensive bag and personal searches before they board flights after Nigerian man Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to set off an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines flight carrying 278 passengers to Detroit.
Airport security around the world has been raised after Abdulmutallab was allowed to board the plane in Amsterdam, even though he appeared on a terrorist watch list.
But Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said there was no need to increase Australia's security level in the wake of the failed attack.
"Australia has a world-class aviation security system," he said.
"There is no plan at this stage to increase the nature of the alerts at Australia's airports but we will continue to be vigilant and take advice on these issue."
Mr Albanese said the Detroit incident vindicated changes he made to Australia's airline security rules only days ago.
Knitting needles, nail clippers and tweezers have been allowed on flights since Christmas Day and airlines are allowed to serve food with metal cutlery for the first time since 2001.
Mr Albanese said these "commonsense" changes meant security staff were able to concentrate on ensuring items such as guns and explosives were not taken aboard aircraft.
He warned that passengers flying to and from the US would face increased security checks.
"That has meant some inconvenience for passengers, but I'm sure they will understand."

Bomb suspect had Qaeda links

Federal authorities charged a 23-year-old Nigerian man with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day, and officials said the suspect told them he had obtained explosive chemicals and a syringe that were sewn into his underwear from a bomb expert in Yemen associated with al-Qaeda.
The authorities have not independently corroborated the Yemen connection claimed by the man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who was burned in his failed attempt to bring down the airliner and is in a hospital in Michigan.
But a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said on Saturday that the suspect’s account was "plausible," and that he saw "no reason to discount it."
Abdulmutallab’s name was not unknown to American authorities. His father, a prominent Nigerian banker, recently told officials at the United States Embassy in Nigeria that he was concerned about his son’s increasingly extremist religious views.
As a result of his father’s warning, federal authorities in Washington opened an investigative file and Abdulmutallab’s name ended up in the American intelligence community’s central repository of information on known or suspected international terrorists.
Members of Congress who were briefed Saturday by governmental officials also pointed to a Yemeni connection.
"The facts are still emerging, but there are strong suggestions of a Yemen-al-Qaeda connection and an intent to blow up the plane over US airspace," Representative Jane Harman, a California Democrat who leads the House Homeland Security subcommittee on intelligence, said in a statement.
The attempt prompted significant changes to airline security around the world during the busy holiday season.

Urban Meyer steps down at Florida

The SEC experienced a major shockwave on Saturday as Florida head football coach Urban Meyer unexpectedly announced that he was stepping down.
"I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family," Meyer said in a statement. "After consulting with my family, [Florida president Bernie] Machen, [athletic director] Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family."
Meyer, 45, was hospitalized with chest pains on Dec. 6, the day after Florida’s loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game.
He will hold a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon and coach his final game in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on Jan. 1. He has been coaching for 24 years, the last five of which were at Florida.
Meyer has a 56-10 record with the Gators, including SEC and national titles in 2006 and 2008 — the only coach to win two BCS titles. He is 4-1 against South Carolina, the sole loss coming in his first season at Florida.

Vindu Dara Singh wins Bigg Boss 3

After a dozen cat fights, two dozen fist fights and three dozen expletives hurled about,BigBoss finally has a winner - Vindu Dara Singh, the son of the legendary wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh.
After staying in the Bigg Boss house since October 4th without having any contact with the outside world, Vindhu won a prize money worth Rs 1 crore and beat out veteran actress Poonam Dhillon model Pravesh Rana. The 45-year-old Vindhu is a struggling actor, he had made his film debut back in 1994 and he hopes his Bigg Boss win wouly provide a boost to his career. He earned a lot of fans for his bouts of anger in the reality show and also for his plotting and planning against the other contestants. The finale was hosted byAmitabh Bachchan and featured performances by evicted contestants Raju Srivastav, Claudia Ciesla, Kamaal Rashid Khan, Sherlyn Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Tanaaz Currim and Aditi Govitrikar.
An ecstatic Vindu was accompanied by his wife and child on stage as he beamed with the trophy and suitcase filled with the prize money in hand. "We all had left behind our families and peaceful lives outside to enter the Bigg Boss house. Although we were competing in a game, we lived like a complete family filled with unique characters and had moments of joy, sorrow and anger. It was indeed another life, a novel experience and we all gained a lot from it. I am extremely delighted in having been chosen the winner. It is a humbling experience, All I can say is thank you for liking me enough to make me a winner," Vindu said after the win.
Incidentally, he received maximum votes from the public but his father Dara Singh never voted for him. "'Yeh SMS karna bachchon ke liye hota hai' (Sending SMS votes is all for kids). I haven't sent any vote for Vindu. Our relatives and friends have sent votes for him," Dara Singh said. Vindhu played the role of Lord Hanuman in the serial "Jai Shri Hanuman" like his dad in the super-hit Doordarshan serial "Ramayan". H was also seen in serials like "Ssshhhh...Koi Hai" and "Karma" and in a Punjabi movie "Rab Dian Rakhan" (1996), which was directed by his father. Recently he appeared in bit roles in "Kambakkht Ishq" and "Partner".
Even though he didn't vote for his son, Dara Singh hopes Vindhu's career gets a boost. "I don't think Vindu has got many opportunities to show his acting calibre. He played Hanuman in 'Jai Shri Hanuman' for which he is remembered, but I always tell him to keep trying. Being in a famous show like 'Bigg Boss' will be very advantageous for him, but even if that doesn't work in his favour, I believe he should keep trying," he said.

Passengers relive terror of Flight 253 as new threat emerges from al-Qaida

Terrified passengers yesterday told of the moment when Umar Abdul Mutallab tried to set off a bomb as their plane commenced its descent on Christmas Day.
Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit was carrying 290 passengers and crew who heard what was described as a "balloon being popped". "What we heard in the beginning was a bang... then a minute later there was a lady shouting things like, 'What are you doing? What are you doing?' " said passenger Elias Fawaz. "We looked back and there was a struggle – and we saw fumes and fire coming out."
Witnesses said Mutallab emerged from a toilet with a pillow over his stomach and a syringe in his hand. He injected the syringe into something held on his stomach, triggering smoke and flames.
"It was terrifying," said Richelle Keepman, another passenger. "We all thought we weren't going to land, we weren't going to make it. We were in the back of the plane and all of a sudden heard some screams and some flight attendants ran up and down the aisles. We saw the fear in their eyes and they grabbed the fire extinguishers."
Another passenger, Syed Jafri, said: "Everybody was rushing towards that area and tried to get water, a blanket and fire extinguisher." The suspected terrorist was said to have been yelling and swearing and "screaming about Afghanistan".
"When [it] went off, everybody panicked," said Jasper Schuringa, a Dutch film director travelling to the US to visit friends. "Then someone screamed, 'Fire! Fire!' I saw smoke rising from a seat... I didn't hesitate. I just jumped." Schuringa said he heard a sound similar to a firework going off and looked across the aisle at the suspect who had a blanket on his lap attempting to ignite an object he was holding. "It was smoking and there were flames coming from beneath his legs," he said. "I searched on his body parts and he had his pants open. He had something strapped to his legs."
Schuringa and the cabin crew then dragged Mutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, to the front of the plane, where he was restrained until landing. Mutallab reportedly told intelligence agents who began interrogating him after he was taken to hospital strapped to a stretcher that he had an explosive powder strapped to his leg. He was trying to set off the device with a syringe filled with liquid.
Mutallab, who had boarded a flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Amsterdam's Schipol airport before transferring to the Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit, had burns on his leg. "The only thing I can tell for sure is that he was severely burned," said Melinda Dennis. "They required a fire extinguisher as well as water to put it out. You could smell the smoke when we landed."
Yesterday details about Mutallab's background and lifestyle started to emerge. University College London issued a statement saying that a student named Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab studied mechanical engineering there between September 2005 and June 2008.His father is Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a prominent Nigerian businessman who retired as chairman of the country's First Bank a fortnight ago. Yesterday he was talking to security officials in Nigeria who were liaising with US and British police.
It has been suggested that, in the recent past, the father became so concerned about his son's activities he reported him to the American authorities and Nigerian security agencies .
Family friends say Mutallab apparently became radicalised during his time at the British International School in Lome, Togo. At the school, he was known for preaching about Islam. He later grew estranged from his family and relocated to Dubai, before moving to London.
Terrorism experts have been quick to draw parallels with the attempt by the British-born "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, a radicalised loner who tried to destroy a transatlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes. Reid was restrained by other passengers and is serving a life sentence in the US.
US authorities are unclear as to whether the Christmas Day device failed to detonate or if the suspect was subdued before he had a chance to activate it. It appears that it was put together on the aircraft, using a variation of the explosive pentaerythritol (Petn) used by Reid.
When Mutallab changed at Amsterdam for Detroit, he was apparently given additional screening, but not to a level that would have established he was carrying suspicious substances.
Terrorism expert Dr Sally Leivesley said the incident suggested that terrorists were changing tack. "This looks as though it is a first attempt of a new way to use the body to conceal explosives," she said. "In the past it was a can of liquid explosive. Now they may be concealing the explosives on the human body."
Kieran Daly, an aviation expert, said: "The latest incident shows that would-be terrorists are having to resort to trying to get very small devices on board planes. Thanks to increased security, the sort of devices are now not big enough to actually bring down a plane."
A security briefing obtained by ABC News in the US said that, following his arrest, Mutallab, who is under guard at a Michigan hospital, claimed to have been ordered by al-Qaida to blow up a plane over US soil. The briefing note stated: "The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen, along with instructions as to when it should be used."
Mutallab had a two-year visa allowing him to stay in the US until next June. According to his entry visa, he was flying from Nigeria to the US for a religious seminar.
"I would say we dropped the ball," said Peter King, the senior Republican on the House of Representatives homeland security committee, who claimed that although Mutallab was not on a "no-fly" list of suspected terrorists he was known to authorities. "My understanding is… he does have al-Qaida connections, certainly extremist terrorist connections, and his name popped up pretty quickly."
US investigators are focusing on whether the incident was part of a larger plot and are exploring Mutallab's links to known al-Qaida operatives in Yemen. The latest incident comes after a spate of domestic terrorism cases in the US sparked fears that terrorists linked to al-Qaida were stepping up their campaign on American soil. "The urgency of striking the US homeland has been growing because of the escalation in Afghanistan and now in many other spots, such as Yemen, the Sahel and the predator strikes inside Pakistan," said a terrorism expert, Professor Walid Phares.
"They feel that by striking they will prompt a popular movement to put pressure on the [US] administration to cease the escalation. Some believe that the perception that the current administration is weaker may have also contributed to an al-Qaida higher push. But, regardless, striking America at home is a standing al-Qaida and jihadist strategic goal."
Peter Hoekstra, the senior Republican on the House intelligence committee, said it was examining Mutallab's links with the radical Yemeni imam, Anwar al-Awlaki, who has inspired a number of terrorists.
Awlaki had contacts with Major Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who is accused of carrying out the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, in November in which 13 people were murdered. According to government officials, Awlaki was also the spiritual adviser to two of the 9/11 hijackers, Khalid al Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, while he was an imam at a mosque in northern Virginia. The FBI investigated him in 1999 and 2000, believing him to be a possible procurement agent for Osama bin Laden.
In Toronto, a terror cell watched videos of Awlaki at a makeshift training camp where an attack was planned on the Canadian parliament and prime minister. "He's a star attraction as a recruiter to young Americans and Canadians," one former American intelligence official told the US media.
This month, in an interview with Al Jazeera, Awlaki expressed surprise that the US military had failed to uncover Hasan's plan, to which he gave his backing. "My support to the operation was because the operation brother Nidal carried out was a courageous one, and I endeavoured to explain my position regarding what happened because many Islamic organisations and preachers in the west condemned the operation," he said.
Awlaki left the US and moved to Yemen in 2002 where he established an English-language website that has thousands of followers around the world. In January 2009, he published an online essay, 44 Ways to Support Jihad, in which he asserts that all Muslims must participate in jihad, whether in person, by funding mujahideen or by fighting the west.
Concerns about his influence in the UK have been expressed by experts on community cohesion. In August, the Observer reported anger that Awlaki was due to speak via a video link at Kensington town hall. The broadcast was dropped after the local council stepped in. He has also been invited to give talks via video link at several London universities. "Mutallab is the latest in a long list of terrorists [Awlaki] has inspired and encouraged," said Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens of the Centre for Social Cohesion.
"The preacher has long been a highly respected figure within a number of British university Islamic societies because, unlike most other radical preachers, Awlaki speaks English as a first language, and being born and raised in America has given him a good understanding of western culture. This makes him very appealing to young western Muslims."
Meleagrou-Hitchens called for British universities to increase their vigilance. "This incident should act as a wake-up call to university authorities," he said. "It is crucial that they now accept the central role they must play in resisting extremists and preventing student groups from promoting hate preachers."
The US has become increasingly concerned that Yemen is now a major al-Qaida training ground. Bordering Saudi Arabia and near the oil-rich nations of the Gulf, it was the scene of one of al-Qaida's biggest pre-9/11 attacks, the 2000 suicide bombing of the US destroyer Cole, which killed 17 US sailors.
The country's government has little control outside the capital and has been involved in a fierce war against Shia rebels in the north. Fighters sympathetic to al-Qaida have fled war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan and used Yemen as a safe haven from where they carry out attacks in Saudi Arabia.
Concerns that the country will become another Afghanistan has prompted the Pentagon to spend nearly $70m (£44m) on military aid to Yemen this year, compared with none in 2008. Yemeni forces are being trained in counter-terrorism and the US is providing the country's military with intelligence.
The fruits of this policy were on display this month when Yemeni jets carried out a dawn bombing in the province of Shabwa, in which scores of Yemeni and foreign al-Qaida operatives were said to have been killed, including Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the regional al-Qaida leader, and his deputy, Saeed al-Shihri, a former Guantánamo detainee. Initially it was thought Awlaki had been killed, but this has been denied by his family.
Phares said: "Al-Qaida has been operating for years in Yemen, without being confronted seriously by the government. It was only this year that President Ali Abdallah Saleh engaged the organisation in an all-out campaign. Al-Qaida has had many years to organise. That is what happens when governments wait too long before acting."
