In the ongoing inquiry against Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, its principal Sister S Sebastina remained missing from the scene for the third consecutive day on Thursday. The principal, who is apparently on a vacation, was supposed to join the inquiry today.
For the first time, however, the school issued a press release to the media pleading innocence. The statement, signed by Father Thomas Anchanikal, vicar general of Shimla Chandigarh Diocese, said Ruchika was never expelled from the school and only "her name was not carried on the rolls".
In an apparent bid to save itself from further humiliation, the release states, "Ruchika was never victimised by the school. When the fee was not deposited for six months continuously from April 1990 to September 1990, her name was not carried on the rolls. There is a possibility that Ruchika's parents might have withdrawn their child from the school under certain circumstances."
While the school clarified that they were "extending full cooperation" to the Administration, the UT claimed otherwise. "Sister Sebastina did not join investigation today as well. Inquiry officer Prerna Puri and deputy district education officer Saroj Mittal went to the school for the third consecutive day and returned empty-handed. The school is only inviting trouble by evading the inquiry. While the entire nation has opened their hearts to get justice for Ruchika, the school continues to remain insensitive to the issue," said a senior UT Administration official.
On Thursday, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged a protest outside the school demanding that strict action taken against it.
Vijay Singh Bhardwaj of VHP said they would demand that the state award given to Sister Sebastina for her contribution to education in 2007 be withdrawn.
She was also presented an award by the Central government for outstanding services, achievements and contributions in August 2009. Unconfirmed reports, however, claimed that Sister S Sebastina did meet officials.
